What is a paper weight calculator?
A paper weight calculator tells you how much a piece of paper weighs from its size and GSM, and what that paper costs at your rate per kg. Printers, packaging makers, traders and buyers use it to check quotes, plan purchases and compare paper grades before ordering. Paper is bought by weight, so knowing the exact kilograms for your job helps you avoid over-ordering and spot a wrong rate quickly.
Paper weight formula (GSM to kg)
Weight per piece (g) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × GSM ÷ 1,000,000
Total weight (kg) = Weight per piece (g) × Quantity ÷ 1,000
Total paper cost (₹) = Total weight (kg) × Paper rate (₹/kg)
Cost per piece (₹) = Total paper cost ÷ Quantity
Unit conversion: 1 cm = 10 mm and 1 inch = 25.4 mm. The calculator converts length and width independently, so you can mix units.
Worked example
Paper size 300 × 200 mm, 120 GSM, 1,000 pieces, rate ₹65 per kg:
- Weight per piece = 300 × 200 × 120 ÷ 1,000,000 = 7.2 g
- Total weight = 7.2 × 1,000 ÷ 1,000 = 7.2 kg
- Total paper cost = 7.2 × 65 = ₹468
- Cost per piece = 468 ÷ 1,000 = ₹0.468

This tool calculates one flat rectangular sheet of paper. It does not include bag folds, gussets, handles, cutting wastage, printing, lamination, foil, embossing, labour, overheads, margin or GST. The paper rate is the one you enter — it is not a Kyara Packaging price.

Paper Weight Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions
Weight per piece in grams = length (mm) × width (mm) × GSM ÷ 1,000,000. For example, a 300 × 200 mm sheet at 120 GSM weighs 300 × 200 × 120 ÷ 1,000,000 = 7.2 grams. Multiply by the number of pieces and divide by 1,000 to get kilograms.
One A4 sheet (210 × 297 mm) of 70 GSM paper weighs about 4.37 g. A ream of 500 sheets weighs about 2.18 kg. One square metre of 70 GSM paper weighs exactly 70 g.
One A4 sheet of 300 GSM paper weighs about 18.7 g, and one A3 sheet about 37.4 g. 500 A4 sheets of 300 GSM weigh about 9.4 kg.
200 A4 sheets weigh about 0.87 kg at 70 GSM, 1.00 kg at 80 GSM and 1.25 kg at 100 GSM. Note that one sheet has two pages if printed on both sides.
1,000 A4 sheets weigh about 4.4 kg at 70 GSM, 5.0 kg at 80 GSM and 6.2 kg at 100 GSM.
GSM stands for grams per square metre. A paper of 120 GSM means one square metre of that paper weighs 120 grams. Higher GSM means heavier, thicker paper.
First find the area of the sheet in square metres, multiply by the GSM to get grams, then divide by 1,000 for kilograms. This calculator does all of it for you and also converts mm, cm and inches automatically.
Paper is bought by weight. Total paper cost = total weight in kg × paper rate per kg. Paper cost per piece = total paper cost ÷ quantity. Paper rates move with the market, so enter your current ₹/kg rate.
Convert each side to millimetres (1 inch = 25.4 mm), then use length × width × GSM ÷ 1,000,000 for grams. In this calculator, simply choose INCH from the unit dropdown.
